Guerrilla Girls at Tate

From Tate:

This display shows the work of the anonymous feminist collective who use daring text and phrases to expose injustice in the art world and beyond…

The art in this room shows the different ways in which Guerrilla Girls play and provoke the museum industry. As well as fly posters, the group have produced stickers, comics and even children’s activity books as part of their agenda to be the ‘conscience of the art world’.

The Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly

From The Curator
The absence of women in history and art not to mention the deliberate exclusivity of male-dominated networks gave rise from 1980s onwards to countless institutions and alliances that continue to exist to this day, among them in 1984 frauen museum wiesbaden.

That same year, the New York Museum of Modern Art launched an exhibition entitled An International Survey of Painting and Sculpture that set out to bring together the most important contemporary positions in the art world. There were only 13 women represented among the 169 selected positions there. All of the exhibitors were, moreover, white, and came from the United State or Europe. In this context, female activists from the art world founded a group to tackle the severe structural inequality in the treatment of women and People of Color in the art world: the Guerrilla Girls.

They counted how many solo shows had been held in major US museums, how many female artists were represented by commercial galleries, and what they earned. They made the sobering results public on what are now world-famous posters and leaflets.

As the “conscience of the art world” they have for 40 years now been exposing the exclusion mechanisms and under-representation of women and People of Color in the art and culture world, which so likes to claim it is diverse, enlightened and progressive. Their art does not shy away from tackling Pop culture or politics, either. In order to preserve their anonymity, the members wear gorilla masks when in public and act using the pseudonyms of historical female artists, such as Käthe Kollwitz or Frida Kahlo.

In a special show, over 30 posters and films offer an overview of what is to this day an incomparable creative output.

The Art of Behaving Badly marks the launch of the jubilee shows to celebrate the 40th anniversary of frauen museum wiesbaden, with the kind support of the State of Hessen, SV SparkassenVersicherung and the City of Wiesbaden’s Department of Culture.

BEYOND THE STREETS: POST GRAFFITI

ROGER GASTMAN:

The concept of “POST GRAFFITI” encapsulates the genre's journey of rebellious subway artists, originating from 70’s and 80’s NYC, to the global movement they’ve inspired. The term signifies a shift from the illicit nature of traditional graffiti to a more accepted, legitimate art form in gallery settings. As the movement has progressed, artists associated with “POST GRAFFITI” continue to draw from the rich history of graffiti writing and the streets, forming a loose coalition that blurs and elevates their source inspiration through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation.

“POST GRAFFITI” is at the core of “BEYOND THE STREETS”, representing the embodiment of a larger picture of how far it has all gone and how raw it still remains. Graffiti has become a cultural phenomenon that informs music, fashion, politics, entertainment, marketing, and, of course, contemporary art. It has been on the runways of major fashion houses and memorialized in books and documentaries.

Framing the Female Gaze: Women Artists and the New Historicism - Group Exhibition

From Lehman Press Release:

The women who loom large on canvases, in photographs, prints, sculpture and collage in Framing the Female Gaze vitally connect us to political and social issues and to the cultural and social discriminations that women experience now. The works in this exhibition show how women artists today focus their gaze on both women and men. Artists are magicians: they seek subjects for their work from the past, then with new images change what we thought we knew. The artists in Framing the Female Gaze looked at the art of the 19th-century which marked the beginning of Modernism, of seeing and being seen as conscious subject matter.

The artists exhibiting work in Framing the Female Gaze include Lara Alcantara Lansberg, Lizzy Alejandro, Elise Ansel, Claudia Doring Baez, Cecily Brown, Elinor Carucci, Jordan Casteel, Bhasha Chakrabarti, Katie Commodore, Camille Eskell, Lalla Essaydi, Martha Edelheit, Rose Freymuth- Frazier, Scherezade Garcia, Kathleen Gilje, Guerrilla Girls, Eunice Golden, Jenna Gribbon, Mimi Gross, Hilary Harkness, Lewinale Havette, Vera Iliatova, Ayana V. GUERRILLA GIRLS. PORTFOLIO COMPLEAT, 1985 - 2016 - EXHIBITION

Guerrilla Girls.

BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON - EXHIBITION

From the curator: Beyond the Streets London pays homage to the monumental moments from the worlds of graffiti, street art, hip-hop and punk rock as well as the artists who immortalised them. From painting trains to social activism, to the clothes we wear and the perception of underground art and culture - leading to a global creative revolution. BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON is a celebration of graffiti's core ethos of an innate desire for mark-making and challenging authority. By its very nature, graffiti is ephemeral, its own existence is temporary, but the culture and its rebellious spirit prevail.

Following blockbuster exhibitions in Los Angeles in 2018 and New York in 2019, BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON will be curated by Roger Gastman, noted graffiti historian and founder of BEYOND THE STREETS, in conjunction with a team of guest curators.

Women and Change

What does it mean to be a woman today? What is feminine? Who defines what femininity is? Who can be female? And is femininity gender specific at all?

The exhibition Women and Change unfolds how Western art history has depicted women from the Modern Breakthrough of the late nineteenth century to the most recent contemporary art. In a wealth of works of art by Danish and international artists, you can explore how artists have, over the course of the past 150 years, reflected, responded to and resisted changing perceptions of both women and gender: from Impressionist portraits to performative body art. From lush studies of nudes to critical examinations of how history is written.
